If you sign up to a hosting company who offer a free domain name during the registration process make sure the domain name is registered in your name not the hosting companies name. Think about it you have developed a web site, it has become very popular. You then decide to sell, transfer the domain name to a large company but find out you don't actually own it and the hosting company will not release it.

6) Domain name access

If possible request access to the domain name control panel if purchased with a hosting package. This will give you
access to Manage DNS, Change Nameservers, Change IPS Tag ,Modify Contact Details ,WHOIS Opt out, unlock domain name. If you have registered the domain name with a domain name registration company like 123reg.co.uk then all this will be provided.

7) Do your research

Before you register a domain name do some research. Do a search on Google based on the nature of your business, service and see what top 10 Google results are returned. This will generate some idea's before registered a domain name. Speak to the
hosting company or read the terms and conditions before signing up to a hosting provider who offers a free domain name with each account. Discuss your domain name choice with friends or business contacts and get feedback on the domain name you plan to register.
